Debate Judge — Eko Legislative 4.0 Finale

The LASU Debate Society was invited to judge the finale of Eko Legislative 4.0, and I was selected to represent the society — announcing the best speaker and the winning division across four Lagos divisions: Ikeja, Badagry, Lagos, and Ikorodu.

From competitor to judge

Not long after winning Best Debater, I found myself on the other side of the table. The LASU Debate Society was invited to judge the finale of Eko Legislative 4.0, and I was selected to represent the society — the one handed the mic at the end to call it.

Standing there, weighing arguments instead of making them, was its own kind of lesson. When you've competed, you know exactly what it feels like to be the one waiting on a verdict — and that makes you listen harder.

The finale

Four divisions came through from across Lagos — Ikeja, Badagry, Lagos, and Ikorodu — and it fell to me to announce the best speaker and the winning division at the close of the event.

What I took from it

Being trusted to judge is a different weight from being judged. It's not about who spoke loudest; it's about who made the strongest case and carried the room while doing it. Getting to be the one who recognises that — fairly, out loud, in front of everyone — is a responsibility I don't take lightly.
